Questions to Ask Yourself When Getting a New AC

You have plans to install a new air conditioner for your home. You may have inherited your current air conditioner when you moved into the house and this is the first time you’ve needed to confront getting a new one. But even if you’ve gone through an AC replacement before, it’s probably been many years since you did it the last time and you’re unsure about what you need to do or what type of cooling system to get.

No problem, we’re here to help. We’re the HVAC company in Mcdonough, GA who can help make the process of putting in a new air conditioning system straightforward and with excellent results. Let’s first start with some questions you can ask yourself that will help get the process going. These will also lead to questions you can ask your AC installers.

Am I interested in a high-efficiency system?

High-efficiency air conditioners are now popular options, and it’s easy for most people to think that their best choice for a new AC is one of these units. However, higher efficiency air conditioners are more expensive to install, so if you’re interested in getting a high-efficiency system, you’ll need to weigh several factors.

Something to keep in mind is that current ACs have higher standards for efficiency than 10 years ago, so almost any new AC you have to replace your old one will have better efficiency. In some cases, you may be better off with a standard efficiency system. But some high-efficiency units may deliver great long-term savings. Talk to your installers about what high-efficiency air conditioners may be good marks for your house.

Is a heat pump a good option?

Heat pumps are like air conditioning systems that also provide heating when needed. They work well in our mild winter climates, and this makes them attractive choices for many homes. If you have an electric furnace for your home heating and it’s also coming near to point where it will need replacement, a heat pump becomes an excellent choice—you can have two comfort issues solved in one.

On the other hand, if you have a gas furnace, we’d recommend keeping with that type of heating system. Because a heat pump is only worth the installation cost if it does both heating and cooling, you’re better off going with a standard air conditioner if you aren’t going to also replace the heater.

How large an AC does my home need?

AC “size” is a measure of the cooling capacity of the system. To work properly, an air conditioner must be in the zone between too small and too large. You can check on your current AC’s cooling capacity (which is listed in tons) to get an idea of what size you’re looking for. But please leave the actual sizing of your new system to the professionals: this must be done accurately of the new air conditioner will struggle to cool the house and end up wasting power.
