Are Gas Furnaces Dangerous to Have in Homes?

Monday, December 20th, 2021

Any natural gas-burning appliance in a house has the potential to become hazardous. This is true of any appliance that burns any type of fuel. Electrical devices can create dangers from high voltage shocks or electrical fires.

This is a way of showing that, although a gas furnace can present dangers for a house, it isn’t much different in that way than many other appliances you use regularly. Because of the power of gas furnaces, people often find them intimidating and worry about them more—but if they were significant dangers, they would never be allowed into residential homes in the first place.

Your gas furnace can create hazards for your house, but you can prevent most of them through some basic steps. Modern gas furnaces are built to high standards of safety, and with the proper attention, you can minimize the possible harm to almost nothing. That’s what we’ll focus on in the rest of this post.

Why Is My Heater Shutting Off Early?

Monday, November 22nd, 2021
gas-burners-furnace

The HVAC system in your home is designed to turn on the heating system when the thermostat registers that the household needs warmth. The thermostat signals the heater to start its heating cycle, and then it runs until the thermostat detects the home’s temperature has reached its target setting. The thermostat then has the heater cycle down until it’s needed again.

As the winter temperatures continue to fall, you’ll notice your heating system will run in longer cycles. This is normal: your house will lose more heat to the outside, requiring the heater to run for longer to reach your desired temperature. (We recommend a setting of 68°F, which not only makes the heater run less often but also slows down heat loss to the outdoors.)

But you may be experiencing something … different. A heater that seems to run in shorter and shorter cycles, shutting off early before it can heat up the house enough, then turning back on a short time later and repeating the process. Why is your heater doing this? And what can you do about it?

Do you know how best to set the thermostat in your house for both comfort and energy efficiency in winter? It isn’t difficult to learn. You only need to remember two things: 1) keep it set at a steady temperature during the day and a lower temperature at night, 2) aim to make the daytime temperature around 68°F.

If you follow these basic guidelines, you should enjoy a warm house without needing to touch the thermostat except to make the adjustment between day and night or before leave the house. And if you have a programmable or smart thermostat, you won’t even need to do that much!

You want to stay warm and toasty through the season in your house, especially since you’ll be spending more time indoors than usual. If you discover that your house isn’t as warm as it should be, what can you do about it?

You might first think that the answer is to turn up the thermostat more until you feel warm. But how much more are you planning to turn it up? Higher than you normally do? If so, that’s not right. Something else is wrong with your HVAC system that’s resulting in less cold-weather comfort.

Why You Must Only Hire Professionals for Heating Service

Monday, November 23rd, 2020
wrenches

Of course, we want you to call us when you need an HVAC company in Covington, GA. But we also want you to know why you need professionals like us when you have problems with your heater and need help.

You have other options when it comes to heating repair: You can try to fix the problem yourself. You can look to a local neighborhood “handyperson” who “knows a few things” to see what they can do. Or you can call an unlicensed heating contractor who offers super cheap prices but says they can get the job done.

Please don’t take any of these options! Professionals HVAC technicians are the only people to turn to, and for some excellent reasons:

1. They’ll keep you safe

Safety is always the top priority when it comes to heating services. Most homes in the area rely on natural gas furnaces for winter heat, and work on any natural gas-powered appliance is potentially hazardous without the proper training and tools. In fact, it might be illegal in your local jurisdiction for a non-licensed person to work on any appliance connected to a gas main. You put your family at risk when you allow for amateur work on your heating system.

2. They have insurance to protect you

In order to have an HVAC license, a contractor must be able to show they have sufficient levels of insurance. This insurance is to protect the customer in case something goes wrong on-site. An injured worker or damage to the house may end up costing the customer because the contractor didn’t have the proper insurance. This isn’t a chance you want to take—make certain you have a fully-insured contractor.

3. They have the best tools and know how to use them

The technology of heating and air conditioning advances constantly, and the only people who will have the best tools to get repair jobs and other services done are the professionals. Not only do pros have the best tools available to them, but they’re also trained on them and receive continuing training to keep up with the newest advances.

4. They take responsibility

If you bring in an amateur fly-by-night contractor for a repair, they may do a quick fix that seems to get the job done, and then leave and you’ll never hear from them again. This is a problem because that “repair” they did has a good chance of failing because of the sloppy job they did. Professionals take responsibility for their work, and they’ll follow up when a customer isn’t satisfied.

5. They save you time and money

The “appeal” of amateur or DIY work is that it will save time and money. But they actually do neither. Poor workmanship on a heating system means having to call in other people to fix the problem later, and there goes that time and money. Professionals will never rush a job, but they’ll still get the work done in a timely manner, and they’ll get it done right so you won’t need them again.
