Can I Fix My Furnace Myself?

wrenches

We know that when it’s cold outside and your home’s furnace stops working, you’ll want it repaired as fast as possible. This makes it tempting to see if you can do the repairs yourself—maybe you can find an online guide that will show you how. You might even be able to save money if you do the repairs on your own.

There’s nothing wrong with doing basic troubleshooting with your furnace to see if there’s a simple reason why it isn’t running properly. But, troubleshooting is different from trying to actually repair a furnace: opening up the cabinet and using tools to fix a problem. We can’t stress this enough: do not attempt to repair your furnace if you cannot find a basic explanation for why it’s not working. Always call for licensed professionals for your furnace repairs in Decatur, GA.

DIY furnace repair is potentially dangerous

There are several reasons to only allow professionals to repair your furnace, but the biggest one is that it’s much safer. The majority of furnaces in our area burn natural gas to create heat. Any appliance that burns natural gas is off-limits to amateur repair attempts. Even a slight error working with gas lines, burners, valves, etc. can create dangers.

With a gas furnace, amateur repairs can cause the furnace to begin leaking gas into the living spaces, expose people in the household to harmful combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide, and create risks of explosions. Only technicians licensed to work on gas appliances should be allowed to diagnose and repair a malfunctioning gas furnace.

What about electric furnaces?

Don’t try to repair an electric furnace on your own either. Although an electric furnace doesn’t present the same potential hazards as a natural gas one, it can still cause high voltage shocks if tampered with. A bad electric furnace repair can also create risks of an electric fire later on.

Only trust pros to diagnose a furnace problem

Aside from the safety concerns with DIY furnace repairs, there are other reasons to leave the work to experts. One is that only professionals can properly diagnose the source of a furnace malfunction. If you aren’t trained on HVAC equipment, it’s difficult to determine exactly why a furnace isn’t working. Is it a gas flow problem? A thermostat connection loss? A fault in the control board? Diagnosis is a critical part of furnace repair, and only professionals can do it correctly.

Only trust pros to fix a furnace so it stays fixed

You don’t want to “repair” your furnace only to have the problem return in a few weeks or even a few days, but this is a major risk you run with any amateur fix. “Patch-up” jobs just won’t cut it when your family’s comfort is on the line. When you call the HVAC pros at Premier Heating & Air, we’ll see that the job is done right the first time and doesn’t come back. This is an important part of our dedication to our work.
